A suspect who escaped police custody on Monday was sentenced to 6 months in prison before Resident Magistraate Martha Agutu in Kisumu Law Courts.

The court heard that on August 27, 2018 when Stephen Onyancha was being escorted to the court cells after taking a plea of not guilty escaped and run away from the custody of police officer George Omondi and Sergeant Stanley Mwanja, jumping over the court walls.

His attempts to disappear were cut short after the public came to the rescue of the police after they helped nab the suspect at Railways Station near Lake Victoria and the police officers who were after him captured and returned him back to the cells.

Mr. Oyancha had been charged with defiling a 15-year-old girl and being in possession of bhang during the December 2017 festive season at Nyalenda in Kisumu, pleading not guilty before Principal Magistrate Christopher Yalwala

He was then given an option to pay a bond of Sh100, 000 or be remanded for two weeks before the case appears for mention.

The accused told the court that he was afraid and under pressure because it was the first time being charged and he did not know where he will get the Sh100, 000 to pay for the bond.

Mr. Onyancha was sentenced to 6 months in prison with an option to appeal in the Court of Appeal while awaiting mention of the first charges on September 7.
