Former Kenyan Premier League champions Sofapaka registered their second win in a row after beating their hosts, Mathare United, 2-1 at Kenyatta Stadium yesterday.
It was the type of result coach Sam Ssimbwa needed just after Batoto Ba Mungu, who were reinstated to the league a few weeks ago, got Sh150 million three-year-sponsorship from betting firm Betika.
George Maelo headed home Charles Okwemba’s 25th minute free kick to put Sofapaka in the driving seat.
The visitors continued from where they had left off in the first half with veteran Humprey Okoti extending the lead 10 minutes into the second half.
Tyson Otieno pulled a goal back during injury time, but it was too late to salvage a point for Mathare.

This was Sofapaka’s second win after they bounced back from their 1-0 defeat to Sony Sugar to beat Western Stima 3-1 in Kisumu.
In Nakuru, champions Tusker got their first win of the season thanks to Ugandan, Shaffique Batambuze’s 44th minute penalty to beat Chemelil Sugar.
Tusker coach George Nsimbe praised his boys for the victory, adding that it was the beginning of better things to come. Tusker lost its two opening matches to Nzoia Sugar and Thika United
“That victory has inspired us and we are determined to win more matches after this one,” Nsimbe told Standard Sports.
