Over the last three years, we have witnessed increased police involvement in disruption of citizen activities than seen in more than the last two decades.
It all started with the jubilee government buying sophisticated anti-riot equipment immediately they came to power. During the CORD demonstrations against the IEBC, the police on several occasions disrupted and caused chaos in largely peaceful demonstrations.
The civil society peaceful demonstrations on the 3rd on November and the 12th of December were disrupted by the police even before they began. The same was witnessed when the doctors tried to demonstrate on 5th of December against the government’s failure to implement the collective bargaining agreement they had signed three years earlier.
The police were also deployed in large number around parliament during the debates on the changes to the electoral laws on the 20th and 22nd December 2016.
The incidents above should worry Kenyans as we get closer to the election year. The incumbent government is ready to use the police in all ways so as to win the general elections.
