It was not until recently that one of my articles was published in a local daily.
I was extremely exhilarated that my work had been published. I quickly ensured that all and sundry had taken notice.
My colleagues could not believe it was me, saying there are other people in the neighbourhood with the same name. And to prove the doubting Thomas’s wrong, I had to produce a copy of the email I had sent, with the story attached.
Unfortunately though, is the stark truth that emanated. Kenyans have a preference for foreign products, especially Western and Eastern goods. A case in point is the recent revelation of the exportation of cheap tilapia fish from China to ‘meet the market demand’! This is ridiculous! We have no taste for our locally available goods. Neither does the literature work. I appreciate that it is painstaking and rigorous to produce a classic piece. I may not be a prolific writer, may be a real novice. But even famous writers began from somewhere. For one to become a successful writer, he needs help.
I appeal to all stakeholders to lend helping hands. However, aspiring writers should write and read literature materials and other publications widely.
