Let's all join the fight against Female Genital Mutilation

It's time we crucified those old grannies who have made it their core business to perpetrate female genital mutilation (FGM).

If FGM is not a crime against humanity, I don't know what is. FGM is a backward practice that has been rebuked and chided all over the world even by United Nations organisations like Unicef.

One wonders why these women uphold a custom that puts the lives of girls at risk. Is it purely for the preservation of culture or do they women do it to make a few extra coins? All indications are that they do it for the money.

It's sickening to even imagine they do not care about the poor hygiene conditions associated with the practice. Some use old razor blades while other opt for broken glasses. They expose girls to HIV and Aids and other deadly infections.

The Government outlawed the practice but this has done little to deter the perpetrator who even collude with national government administrators like chiefs.

FGM can lead to a girls death through severe bleeding leading to haemorrhagic shock, neurogenic shock as a result of pain and trauma, and overwhelming infection and septicaemia.

This is pure ignorance and we all know that ignorance bleeds poverty and poverty is the reason we are still a third world country. Civilisation comes with a price and its time our leaders in areas famous for this practice woke up from their deep slumber of fat monthly salaries and waged war against female genital mutilation. The existing anti-FGM laws should be enforced so that perpetrators can be punished.

Let's boost girl child education to help them lead meaningful lives by reporting any incidents of  FGM so that thelaw can take its rightful course against these culprits.
