Reformed criminals are set to benefit from the National Youth Service (NYS) programmes as a way of rehabilitating them.

Kisumu County Commissioner John Elungata said his office is working out a model that will see adult reformed criminals absorbed in the programmes while minors taken to rehabilitation centres.

Speaking yesterday, Mr Elungata said the adults will take part in the next phase of the NYS slum upgrade programme that is set to begin anytime from now.

A majority of the ex-offenders are from the dreaded "42 brothers", a gang that has been suppressed over the recent past.

"When we got information that the "42 brothers" had been terrorising residents, we enhanced our security operations and a majority of them have been arrested while others chose to surrender. Currently, they are not a threat," said the county commissioner.

He, however, acknowledged some members of the gang are still at large. "We  have information that some criminals affiliated to the "42 brothers"  are still operating around. I would like to assure the public that we are doing everything to ensure they are completely wiped out of Kisumu," he said.
