Kenya: Veteran politician Kenneth Matiba has been admitted to a Nairobi hospital after developing complications on Wednesday evening.
The former Kiharu MP was airlifted from a health facility in Mombasa and referred to Karen Hospital in Nairobi. It is the first time the public has been notified of the hospitalisation of the second liberation icon by a family member.
Mr Matiba had reportedly been admitted at the unidentified coastal facility for the past one week.
Thursday, George Mwithi, a relative, said the former lawmaker had experienced respiratory complications and was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit.

Mr Gachugu urged Kenyans to pray for the Matiba’s quick recovery.
“As the family, we are appealing for Kenyans to join hands and pray for our leader who has remained mindful of citizens,” he said.
The 72-year-old Matiba has a huge following in Murang’a and all leaders aspiring to win political seats use his name to reach voters.
Matiba’s health worsened after his release from detention. He was detained when he and other leaders put up a spirited campaign to advocate for a multi-party democracy.
