Kenya: Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary Eng. Michael Kamau has confirmed Lucy Mbugua as the Managing Director of Kenya Airports Authority.

She will serve for a period of three years.

The appointment was announced Friday by the Chairman of the Board of Directors Prof. Mutuma Mugambi.

“It is great pleasure that the board of directors and I announce the appointment of Ms. Lucy Mbugua as the managing director of KAA for a term of three years effective today. Ms. Mbugua emerged as the best candidate from over 50 candidates after an intensive interview process. The recruitment process was as per the KAA Act and Public Service Commission guidelines. Ms Mbugua has provided effective leadership at KAA over the last five months that she has been acting in the position and we have every confidence that she is the right candidate to drive the next phase of the expansion and modernization of JKIA and the other airports across the country,” Prof Mugambi said in the statement sent to newsrooms.

Mbugua has been the Acting MD at KAA since August 15, 2013 to replace Eng Stephen Gichuki, who was proceeding on a terminal leave pending expiry of his term.

She  holds a Masters of Business Administration in Aviation from Moi University; a Postgraduate Diploma in Sales and Marketing from Dayton Ohio, USA; and a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing from the University of Nairobi.

She is currently pursuing a PhD in Strategic Business Management from the Moi University.

Mbugua has previously served as the authority’s General Manager for Marketing and Business Development. She has also headed Marketing and Communications department at the Kenya Airways.

Her appointment comes when the expansion and modernisation works at JKIA is gathering steam.

In December 2013, President Kenyatta presided over the groundbreaking for a 20 million passenger terminal at JKIA which will cater for current and future demand of the facility, which is positioning itself as the gateway into the region.
