Officials of the Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) and Kenya University Staff Union (Kusu) have called for a meeting of governing councils to endorse an industrial action.
This follows a failed meeting between the two unions and Ministry of Education officials.
Kusu Secretary General Charles Mukhwaya said the Ministry of Education had invited them for a meeting to discuss the report over the alleged embezzlement of funds by the universities.
He said they camped at Jogoo House all day long yesterday waiting to meet Education PS Belio Kipsang, who failed to show up
“We had been invited by the Ministry of Education for a meeting to which we carried more proof of what we feel is corruption and abuse of office to swindle money meant for the university staff. We have waited but nobody has come to start the meeting,” said Dr Mukhwaya.
The union officials said they wrote to the ministry on December 31, last year giving the cabinet secretary 14 days to respond to their concerns regarding the pay dispute.
The two unions said they had hoped to discuss the matter that is controversial in a boardroom, but being ignored will ignite unwarranted industrial action.
“We had hoped to use this meeting to sort out the issues, but it seems we have not been taken seriously. We have now called our governing councils to meet this Friday to advise on the next course of action,” said Mukhwaya.
Kusu and Uasu claim to have incriminating evidence against university chiefs for misusing Sh3.9 billion meant for salaries and house allowance for eligible staff.
