Water Ministry receives Sh13 billion grant

NAIROBI, KENYA: The Water Ministry has received a boost in the fight against drought and water shortage in the country after US Government gave it a Sh13 billion grant. The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water David Stower said the money will be used to construct more water reservoirs in various parts of the country to mitigate water related problems.

According to the PS, dams will also be constructed in areas where floods have caused havoc among the residents, including Nzoia and Budalangi where flooding has been experienced for years.

Dr Stower made the remarks when he led a team of engineers to inspect Chemususu dam in Koibatek district Baringo County constructed by the Government to a tune of sh4.9 billion.  Other such dams will be constructed at the coast region, East Pokot in Baringo County among other areas.

During the visit, the PS announced that Chemususu was one among 28 other large dams earmarked by the Government for construction. “Only three are complete, this one being among them and the ministry appreciates efforts put in place by the contractor,” he said.
