Property worth thousands of shillings was destroyed in Kanduyi, Bungoma on Thursday night after an oil tanker exploded.
The tanker that was heading to Malaba from Eldoret burst into a ball of flames after falling into a ditch.
The fire quickly spread to roadside kiosks and also destroyed the Bungoma Motor Vehicles Inspection Unit.
Witnesses said the driver and conductor of the tanker escaped unhurt.
Residents complained that the Bungoma Municipal Council fire fighters did not assist in putting out the fire causing it to spread to the stalls.
