Popular TikToker Kakan Maiyo was arrested in Nairobi for allegedly inciting violence against police officers and their families.
The DCI officers apprehended Maiyo on Wednesday at Kimathi House where he runs a private office dubbed the Leta Peleka Logistics. In the viral video, several officers could be seen bundling the businessman who asked them to go easy since he was not resisting.
Trapped by an electric chord, he begged them to be careful.
“Si mrelax kwanza, hii hapa ni stima na itanipiga shock. Si mtoe ii kitu kwa stima. Just relax mnawaste energy hapa. Tulieni,” Maiyo said.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) post the arrest on their X page stating that Kakan was in custody awaiting arraignment.
“Godfrey Mwasiaga Kakan Maiyo, the suspect behind a viral video inciting violence against police officers and their families, has been arrested. The video had been uploaded to his TikTok account. Detectives trailed the suspect to Kimathi House, where he was operating a discreet office under the name Leta Peleka Logistics. He is currently in custody undergoing processing, pending arraignment,” DCI tweeted.
According to the police, the TikToker’s arrest was part of a crackdown on individuals accused of spreading hate and encouraging violence, especially during recent anti-government protests.
This arrest happened on the same day President William Ruto issued a strong warning to those involved in violent attacks on police and damage to public property.
In a speech in Kilimani, President Ruto referred to such posts and videos as acts of ‘terrorism.’ He stated that there would be consequences from the government over the content.
“Nimewavumilia ya kutosha, sasa mtanikoma,” the President said. Ruto added that people no longer protested for good and warned against attacking police officers.
Kakan Maiyo has been vocal regarding the abductions and killings of protesters.
In a video on his TikTok page, he said, “This is my message to DCI, those who are abducting people let me tell you something. We ni mzazi, ndugu na dada ya mtu. Unatumwa kuenda kuabduct mtu ambaye hana silaha, si gaidi ama mwizi wa mali ya umma. Jiulize tu swali,” he said.
Maiyo accused the DCI officers of being used by the government in order to make innocent Kenyans suffer. He added that no one was above the law of Kenya and law of God.
