Gusty snow hits Chicago, delaying hundreds of flights

A new round of gusty winter storm that started to blanket Chicago from Tuesday night is expected to bring the third most populous city in the U.S. another 6 inches of snow.

So far, about 280 flights have been canceled and another 50 delayed at O'Hare Airport. At Midway Airport, about 15 cancellations were reported.

Metra trains were running 20 to 40 minutes late due to switching problems. The Chicago Transit Authority also reported minor delays on the Red and Yellow lines.

The winter storm warning across the Chicago area will remain effective until Wednesday noon.

Temperatures will drop as the snow moves out of Chicago, and the next three nights will see temperatures below zero.

Chicago Weather Center reported that Wednesday marks the 34th day of measurable snow this winter in Chicago, far beyond the average of 18. Measurable snow has fallen more frequently in only two of the past 129 years in Chicago.
