A 200-acre piece of land that was entirely under Alupe leprosy hospital has been allocated for the expansion and establishment of Moi University Alupe Campus.

The Chief Executive Officer of Commission for Higher Education Prof David Kimutai arap Some and Prof Richard Mibei, Vice Chancellor of Moi University led a team in the inspection of the facility situated a few kilometres from Busia town.

Speaking at the Moi University Alupe campus, Teso South Member of Parliament Mary Emase reiterated that they are seeking to see the university become a constituent college of Moi University and eventually graduate into a public university or get a charter to become a full university.

“The procedure is that we have to follow all the steps required because as of now Alupe University is a Satellite Campus, it is non-existent and I want to see it begin to enroll students,” she said.

“But due to certain challenges and requirements that we had not yet met, the university closed down and the students were transferred to Moi University main campus.”

Speaking to The Standard the legislator disclosed that enrollment of students will begin in April this year.

Constituent College

“Once the commission gives the report, they will forward it to the Cabinet, which will make the decision before gazzetment and we are looking forward to seeing Alupe become a constituent college of Moi University.”

Moi University is a Kenyan public university located in Eldoret, western Kenya. It was the second public university to be established in Kenya, after the University of Nairobi. It is one of seven fully fledged public institutions of higher learning (others being the University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Maseno University, Egerton University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and Kenyatta University). Emase disclosed that improvements have been made on the facility and infrastructure as well.

The Nursing Council of Kenya in November 2011 shut the medical college run by Moi University as the council’s inspectors cited lack of adequate accommodation facilities and training equipment as the reasons for the closure.

The council had declared existing boarding facilities unfit for human habitation.

The Nursing Council of Kenya regulates training and registration of nursing students.

Commission for Higher Education (CHE) was established in 1985. It regulates growth and advises the Government on establishment of public universities. However, other core functions of CHE include accreditation and inspection of private universities.

Quality assurance

The Commission for Higher Education is also charged with planning and coordination of education and training courses offered in post-secondary institutions. There are proposals to expand the mandate of the commission to cover quality assurance in public universities.

The Commission of Higher Education has approved 82 degree programmes for private universities granted authority to collaborate for 46 university programmes and validate 105 diploma programmes for post-secondary school institutions.
