NAIROBI, KENYA: The cost of electricity is set to come down beginning December 1, following a review of power tariffs by ERC. The per unit cost of power will go down to Sh15.51 in December from the current Sh15.59 and gradually reduce to Sh12.26 in July 2015.
ERC said reduced over-reliance on costly diesel generators will be key in driving down the cost. Kenya is turning to renewable energy sources (geothermal and wind) and cheap fossil fuels – like coal and natural gas – for power production
Fuel cost, which at the moment accounts for a significant proportion of the power bill, is set to come down to Sh5.19 in December and Sh1.10 by July 2015.
The reduction is despite an application for increased tariffs by Kenya Power, which in its application in February said there was a need to raise the prices to meet its operating costs and investments in infrastructure.
