Ghana to reopen international air borders from September 1

Ghana will reopen air borders to international travel as of September 1 after closing them in March to limit the spread of the coronavirus, President Nana Akufo-Addo said in a speech to the nation on Sunday.

Land and sea borders will remain closed, he said.

Ghana joins countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda among other African countries which have reopened air borders for international travel after a break owing to the global Covid-19 pandemic. 

Kenya handled her first international flight on August 1 since foreign flights were suspended in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

In March, Rwanda suspended all incoming and outgoing commercial passenger flights, only allowing cargo and emergency flights to operate, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The country reopened its airports for scheduled commercial flight operations at the start of August.
