A Cabinet minister has led leaders from Meru in defending Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura against accusations of culpability in 2007/08 post-election violence.
Energy Minister, Kiraitu Murungi, Assistant Minister for Higher Education, Kilemi Mwiria, and three other MPs said they were shocked by the inclusion of Muthaura in the ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo list.
Kiraitu wondered why Muthaura was named yet he was neither a politician nor belonged to any of the parties that disputed results of presidential election.
North Imenti MP Silas Muriuki and his Igembe South counterpart Mithika Linturi added Muthaura alleged political persecution.
But Imenti Central MP, Gitobu Imanyara, said those named must prove their innocence.
The Meru council of elders, the Njuri Ncheke, led by the national secretary general, Phares Ruteere and chairman Paul M’Ithinkia castigated Ocampo. The elders said Muthaura was an innocent civil servant who was only being offered as a political sacrificial lamb.
