The Government will upgrade Kirinyaga Technical Institute into a university college of the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Announcing the plans, President Kibaki also asked professionals to mobilise local communities in tackling challenges affecting them at the grassroots.

The President was speaking to professionals and leaders from Kirinyaga when they visited him at his Harambee House office in Nairobi, yesterday.

He noted that professionals in specialised fields should take up leading roles to develop the country.

"Development at the grassroots should be spearheaded by professionals who have much influence among community members," he said.

Boost agriculture

The leaders from Kirinyaga led by Nairobi Metropolitan Minister Njeru Githae said more than 1,000 acres would be made available for the expansion of the college.

They said the upgrading of the institute would enhance training of professionals and spur growth, especially in agricultural productivity.

The leaders said a trained human resource is key to achieving Vision 2030.

"Kirinyaga is known for producing various quality agricultural products particularly coffee, tea and horticulture. With value addition, local farmers will obtain higher benefits," said Mr Githae.
