Kenya’s Kibiwott Kandie crossed the finish line first at the Valencia Half Marathon on Sunday. December 6 in 57 minutes and 32 seconds, breaking the prior record set by countryman Geoffrey Kamworor in September last year by 29 seconds.

The 24-year-old becomes the first runner to break 58 minutes at the Valencia Half Marathon.

The top four finishers all crossed the line under 58 minutes, with Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo clocking 57:37 and Kenyan duo of Rhonex Kipruto and Alexander Mutiso taking third and fourth in 57:49 and 57:59 respectively.

The sporting world took a moment to react to Kandie’s historic feat, most sending congratulatory messages through social media.

ODM leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga led politicians on social media in congratulating Kibiwott, recognising his efforts in keeping the country’s athletics tradition.
