Police in Nyeri County recovered stolen goods worth Sh1.5 million and arrested five suspects believed to be behind a spate of robberies that took place in Nyeri, Mukurewini and Mathira constituencies.

County Police Commander, Adiel Nyange said the police had arrested the five suspects as part of a syndicate which had been using hideouts in Witethie estate in Kiambu, and Kayole and Umoja in Nairobi.

“We tracked them down for several months and they have been working to sell these stolen goods from their hideouts in Nairobi and Kiambu but we have managed to apprehend the masterminds,” he stated.

Nyange said the suspects were also being held in connection with the murder of a watchman who was killed during the robbery of a church in Ichuga Village in Mathira Constituency in August.

“These robbers targeted, homes, shops schools and even churches, often stealing electronics and home appliances, such as cookers and gas cylinders,” he stated.

They also recovered two motorbikes which had been stolen from two riders in Karatina Town.

“So far we are still conducting further investigations but once concluded we shall arraign the suspects in court,” Nyange stated.

According to the police officers, the goods were often ferried to Kiambu and Nairobi where they were then resold.

Among the items recovered was a branded government laptop which was one of those issued under the Digital Literacy Programme, popularly known as the school laptops project.

“One of the suspects admitted he had stolen it with the intention of reprogramming it for use for his children which is unfortunate to use stolen goods to educate children,” Nyange said.

The officers called on the members of the public to continue volunteering information and also come forward to identify the stolen items.
