A man police believe is behind the Makueni arson attack, where four members of a family were burnt to death today, has been arrested.

57-year-old Joseph Kioko was arrested while on the run at Katheka-Kai in Machakos County.

He is the brother of Regina Mueni who died together with her daughter and two grandchildren in the fire.

He was arrested by members of the public who said he appeared suspicious and had burns on his face.

"Members of the public at Katheka-Kai, Machakos County noticed he had body burns and looked suspicious. They related it to the arson incident which had gone viral and he was frog-marched to police station," says a police report from Makueni Police Station.

Detectives say they suspect that the injuries the man had were inflicted during the lighting of the house the five were sleeping.

According to Makueni county commissioner Maalim Mohammed, the family had family a land tussle and elders were to determine the formula of dividing the disputed parcel tomorrow.

The only one survivor from the incident is recuperating in Makueni Referral Hospital.

Kioko has been moved to Makueni Police Station for questioning.
