A video that was shared widely on Monday showed a Kenyatta University bus almost slipping into the ocean at the Likoni Channel after disembarking from the ferry.

On Tuesday, Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) stated that the driver of the bus failed to maintain a safety speed to ascend at the mainland causing the incident.

KFS, however, maintained that the bus had no passengers since they had alighted before boarding the ferry.

“The driver of the bus failed to negotiate uphill momentum. However, the bus driver was assisted by our staff and managed to proceed on successfully,” read the statement in part.

This comes just over a month after a car slipped from the ferry into the Likoni Channel killing two people on board.

In October, KFS listed a number of safety tips to ensure lives are not lost while crossing the channel.

Here are some of the safety tips:

  • Follow the signs to the ferry and vehicle marshalling area
  • Drive within the stipulated speed limit and allow plenty of room to break
  • Turn on dipped headlights before driving onto or off a vehicle deck
  • Check that your handbrake or parking brake is applied before switching your engine on or off
  • Upon parking your vehicle on board the ferry, drivers are asked not to start their engines until the traffic ahead has begun to disembark
  • Motorists are advised to switch off the engine, engage handbrake, roll down the windows, unbuckle the seat belts and where necessary get out of the vehicle
