A court has issued a warrant for the arrest of a National Police Reservist accused of aiding a suspected defiler to escape.

The reservist reportedly whipped out his firearm and prevented police officers from rescuing a 14-year-old girl from a man who claimed to be her husband.

On Friday, Mpeketoni Resident Magistrate Pascal Nabwana ordered that the reservist be produced in court on or before October 14 to face charges preferred by the investigating officer in the defilement matter.

Mr Nabwana also ordered the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the office of the Director Public Prosecutions (DPP) in Mpeketoni to work closely and ensure the 27-year-old alleged defiler is also arrested.

The suspect remains at large after he fled from his home on Wednesday last week.

Police intend to charge him with marrying a minor and causing her to abandon school. The girl, said to be two months pregnant, was taken to a children's home.

The girl's parents had approached the office of the DPP for help to rescue her and arrest her alleged abductor. The girl's mother told the court she wanted her daughter taken back to school to continue learning.
