A bus driver died on the spot while dozens of his passengers were critically injured after the vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry along the Kericho-Kisumu highway.
The driver of the lorry Registration No; KCM 312 R Isuzu FRR also sustained serious chest injuries in the traffic smash up which occurred opposite Rai Cement located at the border of Kericho and Kisumu county.
According to Kericho Police Commander James Mugera, the Sunday 3 PM occurred after the driver of the bus Registration No; KBU 334C belonging to Reggcom Sacco which was heading to Kisumu general direction from Kericho allegedly overtook dangerously and collided with the oncoming lorry which was coming from the opposite direction.
“As a result, an unknown number of passengers aboard the bus were injured and rushed to various hospitals within Kisumu County for treatment,” he said.
Nonetheless, one of the first responders who rushed to the scene, blamed the accident on obstruction by lorries which had been parked at the shoulders of the road near Rai Cement.
“There were about four lorries which were parked at the shoulder of the road awaiting to enter the company and they are to blame for the accident as they caused an obstruction and the bus driver could not clearly see the road head,” said the source who declined to give his name.
The accident caused a huge traffic snarl up and delays especially from motorist from Kisumu County who were heading back to Nairobi after the weekend.
The body of the deceased driver was removed to Kericho District Mortuary while the vehicles wreckages were towed to Kericho police station.
