Nairobi County governor Mike Mbuvi aka Sonko on January 23 published a notice on the daily papers notifying the public that personal assistant Bernard Kiio Mulwa, deputy head delivery unit Joseph Ireri Kamunde (alias Joe) and Michael Mutua are no longer working with his office.

According to the notice that bears the names, ID numbers, and photographs of the aides, the three were fired for allegedly soliciting bribes from County Government contractors and suppliers under the pretense that they can influence the speedy processing of their payments.

They were also accused of soliciting bribes from unemployed youths, promising them employment as security constables and firefighters.

“Nairobi wishes to state that soliciting and receiving bribes is a criminal offense hence any person masquerading as a Nairobi county employee or associating the county government with such criminal acts should be apprehended and prosecuted in a court of law,” read a part of the notice.

The governor thereafter made a call to any service provider or individual who has been swindled of money to report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, (DCI), The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) or to the County Customer Care No. 0725624489.

The notice further cautioned members of the public that the three are not employees of the County Government and are not mandated to conduct any business related to the County.

Joseph Ireri Kamunde and Benard Kiio Mulwa were members of the ‘dream team’ that the Governor unleashed on October 19, 2017, as professionals to handle his communication and political affairs dockets.

Sonko’s notice comes barely two weeks since his deputy Polycarp Igathe handed in his resignation. Mr. Igathe notified the public of his resignation via Twitter citing failure to earn trust from his boss as the reason.

Dear Nairobians, it is with a heavy heart that I resign my seat as elected Deputy Governor of Nairobi City County effective 1pm on 31st Jan 2018. I regret I have failed to earn the trust of the Governor to enable me to drive Admin & Management of the county. pic.twitter.com/dszOQMBatT— Polycarp Igathe (@IgathePolycarp) January 12, 2018

Igathe’s position is still open as the government decides which way to find a replacement.
