The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has appointed a Deputy National Returning Officer a day to the repeat presidential poll.

In a notice signed by IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati on Tuesday, the Commission appointed Consolata N. B. Maina to conduct the fresh election on October 26.

President Uhuru Kenyatta Monday (October 23) afternoon met Mr Chebukati at Harambee House in Nairobi.

The agenda of the meeting was not made public but the chair had earlier expressed the need for meeting President Uhuru and NASA presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, over issues surrounding the fresh poll.

Initially, Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju had said there was no need for the Head of State to meet the IEBC chairman, insisting that the electoral body should just proceed with preparations for the election.

Last week, the NASA team led by Raila and Musalia Mudavadi met Chebukati at AnniversaryTowers offices but Raila said he had not met as a presidential candidate.

IEBC was thrown into a tailspin after the resignation of Commissioner Roselyn Akombe Wednesday last week, saying the Commission was not in shape to give Kenya a credible election.

She also cited threats on her life.

Uhuru met Chebukati amidst swirling rumours of the IEBC boss’s resignation triggered by his statement last week that he could not guarantee and free, fair and credible election.
