A first-year Maseno university student is recuperating from injuries receiving treatment at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu following an incident in which he was allegedly beaten and assaulted by people believed to be close allies of the university students' union (SOMU) president Fredrick Makajos last week on Tuesday night.
Hillary Omuono was transferred from the institution's dispensary to the hospital when he complained of breathing difficulties and pain in his genitalia after the incident that occurred on Tuesday night at the main campus.
Omuono says he had been accused of what he described as mounting opposition on the leader by blogging in support of an aspiring student leader who is not a member of his community as he appears to be supporting his bid on social media platforms.
Narrating the harrowing ordeal, Omuono said he was at ‘Eatery’ popular among the students for his supper when he received a call from a friend requesting that they should meet at the university's main gate as it approached 8:00 pm.
He said the caller sounded concerned as in an emergency forcing him to heed the request as he could not suspect malice since the suggested meeting point he says is public and ever with a large number of students at that time.
He explains that as he approached the gate, a group of people headed in his direction amidst whom was the SOMU president Fredrick Makajos who he says kept him close by a handshake and turned around with the people in his company surrounding them towards his intended destination.
He narrates that as they came close to cross the Kisumu-Busia highway the student leader (Mr. Makajos) appeared to have been in fury accusing him of abusing him and opposing his leadership through the students' Facebook page Campus Politics Platform (CPP) under a user account bearing the name Makau Mutua.
Omuono says he declined the accusations of being in control of the parody account and insists that he runs one under his own name and has not been posting abusive content on the page and that he has not been opposing the union leaders.
He allegedly said that Mr Makajos slapped him prompting the people in his escort to follow suit as they entered the varsity main gate usually manned by security guards who the student leader commanded to open the entrance wide enough to allow the team in as they hit him randomly as the guards watched helplessly.
He also said that they made him kneel for close to an hour at a dark area with a Bamboo bush near the guiding and counseling department bearly 150 meters away from the institution's internal security office as they bitterly caned him and squeezed his private parts demanding that he reveals the person behind the facebook account believed to be fake or faces their wrath for allegedly abusing and opposing their leader.
Omuono says he had expected the security personnel who had opened the gate into the institution to take action that would rescue him and wonders why it took too long for them to intervene.
A student who witnessed the orgy but pleaded for anonymity said he saw their union's head taking part in inflicting pain on the student as he untied his belt and used it to beat the student.
Omuono added that the unknown individuals forced him to take off his trousers as they dragged him towards the main gate once again in hunt for his friends as he carried his clothes half-naked after surviving razor blade cuts in his back and application of pepper on his back as it had been planned by the student leader after those at the scene failed to produce a blade that the leader demanded for after making him remove his shirt.
"He forced me to remove my shirt and asked those surrounding me to get him a razor blade and pepper so that he cuts my back and apply it on me," said Omuono.
SOMU president Fredrick Makajos has confirmed that he was at the proceeds of the occurrence but has denied taking part in beating the first year education science student saying he has no political differences with him since the SOMU constitution could not allow a first year student seek an elective post as they do not meet the requirements.
He said it was not the first time students got furious over those suspected to be running such social media user account names and insisted that he had saved him from furious students.
He said earlier this year in January the same student had been discovered to be operating a Facebook account under a funny name that posted undesirable content on social media which Omuono admitted saying he had abandoned it after the leaders mounted pressure on him and warned him against it several times.
Mr. Makajos said many times content posted on the page could annoy and are derogatory on the institution and leaders saying one could be easily be angered as many use non-existent names on social media to hurl insults and are mostly agents of propaganda.
The student admits that Makajos had taken him to the institution's hospital after he was grilled by the internal security officer who he says had driven them to a place he could not identify outside the institution alongside the students' president where they grilled him over the matter.
The university's concerned offices have since declined to comment on the matter that has been brought to their attention and they have said that they can only respond once investigations are over.
