Your bedroom is an important place as it is where you retreat to after a hard day’s work. But how does one spruce up the bedroom and create a great ambience with as little effort and time as possible?
Bed valance
A quick way to add flair to your bedroom is by using valances. This is a piece of decorative fabric that is placed between the mattress and the box spring of a bed. It gives a stylish appearance and conceals the sides of the bed and the space under the bed which might sometimes be used for storage.
Properly placed box pleats or gathers give body to the frills and add elegance to the bed. In cold areas, the bed skirt, as it is otherwise known, blocks off the drafts, which could chill the underside of the bed.
These can be bought at bed linen shops or purchased second-hand from flea markets or tailor-made to your specific décor colours and measurements.
Select a valance in a colour that will blend in with most of your bed spreads to eliminate the need to change it with every bed cover swap. It is worthwhile to invest in two or three good quality bedspreads to give your bedroom a luxurious snug look.
Windows
To create a unifying theme, hang window valances that complement or match that of the bed. This is a short piece of cloth or drapery that is put at the top of a window, which hides structural details and conceals the top of the curtain.
A window valance sits best on a window with a curtain box, but can also be improvised for windows that use steel or wooden rods.
It is a quick and cost-effective way to add glamour to a window and requires little maintenance to sustain the look. With a variety of differently priced fabric, you can get valances that fit your budget. If working with one colour in the room, use a variety of tones and textures to give the room a layered look.
Pillows
Pile on pillows on your bed for that hotel-like appearance. To add more appeal, mix large prints with smaller ones, florals with geometric patterns so that the room does not look too clinical.
One to six pillows in varied heights and firmness will make your bed look sumptuous without overdoing it.
Two bedside table or night stands placed on either side of the bed for balance are a good surface to personalise your room with items that make you happy. Place a carafe of water, a good book and a lamp and turn your bedroom into a safe restful place.
