KENYA: A family in Homa Bay County is in mourning following murder of their daughter who had just completed her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

George Odhiambo, 60, is appalled by the death of his daughter Ruth Akinyi, 21, who had just sat for KSCSE exams at Wakula Secondary School in Mfangano Island, Mbita Sub County.

The late Akinyi's uncle Michael Osodo who spoke to The Standard on behalf of the family said he the girl left home for school on Sunday midday, a few kilometers away, where she had been summoned the Principal of her immediate former school.

But as fate would have it, she never reached her destination and the family was only to learn later that she had been murdered that evening.

Akinyi's body was discovered near a bush by children who were passing by.

"She was in good health and prepared lunch before leaving for school, only to be informed by passersby that she was found dead," Osodo said.

He said his niece sustained a serious injury on her right breast after being stabbed with a sharp object by an unknown person.

"The Principal has confirmed to us that he is the one who called the girl since he needed all form four students. We don't know who might have killed her," he added.

Mbita OCPD Wilson Nanga said preliminary investigations had revealed that a man had been paying school fees for the girl without the knowledge of her parents hence they were following him to help with investigations.

"We have launched investigations to follow the man and know who he was to ensure all suspects in the murder are arrested," said Nanga.
The body was taken to Kirindo hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.
