The newly formed Mombasa County Beach Inspectorate Unit has started patrolling public beaches, which are popular sites for holidaymakers in Mombasa.
Job Tumbo, the Mombasa County executive in charge of tourism and culture development, said harassment of beachgoers has been cited as a major impediment to the growth of coastal tourism. The unit is expected to work with other law enforcers to curb this ill.
Mr Tumbo added that the county government is in the process of formulating ways to equip, brand and fully operationalise the beach inspectorate in the new year. Its officers are expected to be equipped with motorised boats, divers’ equipment, communications gear and beach watchtowers.
“We hope to have a distinct uniform for identity, and offer the unit adequate and reliable training in conformity with international standards for officers operating in the hospitality industry,” Tumbo said.
