The newly appointed ambassador to Canada Lucy Chelimo has pledged to strengthen ties between the two countries.

Speaking during her farewell party at her parents' home at Kapkokwon in Baringo Central, Ms Chelimo thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta for the appointment.

The 35-year-old said Canada was a key Western nation with potential in trade, investment and tourism for Kenya.

"As a youthful ambassador, this is an opportunity to go ahead and demystify leadership and break the glass ceiling. I promise to do my best," said Chelimo amid applause.

Area MP Sammy Mwaita (Baringo Central) and Baringo Deputy Governor Mathew Tuitoek attended the function and wished her the best in her new mandate.

Mwaita praised Chelimo's professionalism, openness and the courage she demonstrated during her vetting.

Ms Chelimo was joined by her South Sudan counterpart Julius Bitok in the celebration.

Prof Bitok said their priorities was to bolster economic cooperation and investment promotion to Kenya.

Woman Representative Grace Kiptui said Chelimo was competent and highly qualified for the job she was given and that the Government made the right choice.
