Nakuru, Kenya; Religious leaders in Nakuru and Baringo counties have put up a strong defence against accusations of hypocrisy and corruption levelled against the church by evangelist David Owuor.
The clergy lashed out at Dr Owuor for terming the church corrupt, as they demanded an apology.
They have also called for investigation into Owuor’s activities and claimed he had a hidden agenda.
Led by Bishop Mike Brown of Metro Church, the clerics accused Owuor of tarnishing the name of the church for self-esteem. He said the self-proclaimed prophet should have arrived at the rally using a donkey and not a Mercedes Benz.
“We condemn Owuor for branding church leaders in Kenya as corrupt and untrustworthy. His preaching and prayers were okay, but attacking fellow church ministers will not be entertained,” said Brown.
Chairman of Baringo County Pastors Associations Bishop Daniel Chemon said security deployed to escort Owuor reflects unknown agenda that needs to be investigated by the Government.
“What was the need of four police vehicles to lead Owuor’s convoy into the stadium,” asked Chemon.
Describing Owuor as prophet of doom, Chemon alleged that many followers of the prophet had questionable lifestyles with majority of them having abandoned their families.
Baringo County Assembly Speaker William Kamket also took issue with the prophet and called on the Government to form a commission of inquiry to investigate his activities.
“This man should be investigated because it may turn out that he is leading a cult,” he said.
The church leaders were irked by the evangelist’s insinuation that some of them are peddling gospel of falsehood instead of preaching the truth as guided by the Bible.
Owuor made the remarks at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru during a three-day meeting.
