NAROK, KENYA: The bodies of a prison warder and an inmate who last week drowned in a Narok river were on Thursday retrieved by divers from the Kenya Navy.
The warder, the Narok GK Prison officer in charge Alfred Musila said, drowned in Narok-Enkare River as he was pursuing an inmate who had escaped jail.
“The inmate who was being incarcerated at the facility was trying to escape and the warder pursued him and on reaching the banks of the river, the two had a scuffle and they fell into the river,” said Musila who added that the rifle the warder had earlier used to scare the inmate was recovered moments after the incident.
Divers were called by the Prison Commissioner Isaiah Osugo who was present during the retrieval of the bodies.
Osugo who commended the divers said the incident was regrettable, adding that additional security personnel would be deployed to all prisons to deter such incidents in the future.
“Additional officers will be deployed to deter future prison breaks. Prisoners and the public should know and appreciate that prisons are correctional institutions and not death traps,” he said.
He said reforms in the department were being implemented; adding that on completion, prisons would be more open to the public and that inmates would after completion of their terms would be more useful to the society and integrate well.
