Survivors of the collapsed five-storey building in Kisumu County could earn compensation from the Government, an administrator has said.

Yesterday, Kisumu East District Commissioner Willy Cheboi said he had discussed the issue with the Ministry of Special Programmes and was awaiting feedback before the end of the week.

Mr Cheboi appealed to other donors to offer their help so that all families are assisted, including those  injured during last week’s incident.

He said this when he received a Sh350,000 donation from Kibos Sugar Company. The money is to cater for burial expenses for those who died in the tragedy. Cheboi received the donations on behalf of the bereaved families and expressed gratitude to the company, adding it was a great gesture especially from the business community.

Kibos Sugar Company Director Raju Singh said they would also helped some victims  still hospitalised in settling hospital bills. The ill-fated building situated along Jomo next to Imperial Hotel was under construction when one floor sank trapping  workers inside. Seven lives were lost and nearly 41 people injured.

Public Works minister Chris Obure said his ministry has dispatched a team of experts to investigate the accident.

He promised that a decisive action would be taken against anyone found to have been negligent.
