A body of a patient who had gone missing at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Eldoret has been found floating in a river.
The body of the deceased who had been admitted at the hospital was found in River Sosiani that flows across the town.
The victim was admitted early last month and disappeared from the hospital on July 26 according to the hospital authorities.
“The report we have is that the deceased was admitted on July 12, 2012 and disappeared a few days later,” said OCPD Erastus Muthamia.
Muthamia explained that the man managed to escape by jumping over the perimeter wall of the hospital.
“He was in hospital uniform in the morning. He is alleged to have removed them and ran away,” Muthamia said.
Sophia Kiamba, a witness, said she spotted the deceased’s body on her way to buy fruits in Eldoret town.
She raised alarm and villagers who came immediately reported the matter to Baharini police post about five kilometers from where the body was discovered.
The OCPD said the reason behind the patient’s escape has not been established but promised to give details after investigations and post-mortem results.
The family of the deceased are also said to have reported the disappearance to the police immediately they were informed that the patient was no longer in hospital.
The body was removed from the river and taken MTRH mortuary.
MTRH Public Relations Officer, Ms Selah Plapan told The Standard on Wednesday the hospital did not know why the patient ran away from the hospital but they were investigating the incident.
