The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has called upon neighbouring hospitals to help ease pressure on the facility.

MTRH, Kenya’s second largest referral hospital located in Eldoret, has seen an increase in patients with minor complications therefore hampering efforts to give special attention to complex cases.

It now wants other hospitals in the region to handle minor cases to allow the facility to improve access to quality healthcare to Kenyans requiring specialised treatment.

The hospital is currently congested, handling over 1000 patients that is way above its 800-bed capacity.

The hospital’s Director John Kibosia said the institution would send medical experts and consultants to other medical facilities to assist in training medical personnel.

“We want the facility to purely be a referral hospital handling special and complex cases instead of handling small ailments that can be properly dealt with at other lower level hospitals,” explained Dr Kibosia.

He said MTRH would partner with other hospitals in the North Rift region to exchange medical knowledge adding that MTRH had already signed a memorandum of understanding with the Plateau Mission Hospital.

“The public believes that you can only get good medical care at MTRH and that is why we need to work as partners to build confidence among our people,” said Kibosia.

He added that the healthcare provider waives more than Sh2.5 million every month on patients who cannot afford to pay hospital bills, reiterating that the cost would be reduced if patients utilised other facilities in the region.

The director was speaking after hosting a consultative stakeholders forum on improvement of healthcare in Uasin Gishu County.

Also in attendance were the hospitals’ Deputy Director Clinical Services Dr Wilson Aruasa, Eldoret East DO Shem Oluchiri and Eldoret Town Clerk Stanislaus Ondimu.
