Gangsters gunned down an Eldoret businessman on Monday night, killing him on the spot. The man was driving home at around 1am when the thugs accosted him about a kilometre from his home on the outskirts of the town.

Eastern Rift Valley Regional Commissioner, Mr Wanyama Musiambo said nothing was stolen from the businessman and that the motive of the killing was unknown.

The incident occurred near Kipkaren estate, about eight kilometres from Eldoret town along the Eldoret/Ndalat road.

Police identified the businessman as Mr Isaac Maiyo.

Hundreds of protesting residents gathered at the scene of the incident causing a major traffic snarl up. They claimed that suspected criminals dressed in jungle fatigue had earlier in the night terrorised people along the road before Maiyo was killed.

They further claimed that several people had been killed on the same route.

Community policing

"This is criminal activity and we will get to the bottom of the incident. No arrests have been made but the District Criminal Investigation Department has launched investigations," said Musimbo, who was accompanied by Uasin Gishu Deputy OCPD Benjamin Onsongo.

He said it was unfortunate that the elderly man was killed just a week after community-policing committees held a meeting.

Musiambo pledged to review their community policing strategy to ensure it was effective at containing crime.

He noted that the police had recovered five firearms and arrested five criminals in the last two months.
