A man hacked his mother to death in an incident that shocked villagers in Nandi County.
Separately police have launched a manhunt for a pastor in Uasin Gishu County after he allegedly strangled his wife in Eldoret town.
In the first incident, the man slashed his mother with a panga on the neck, face and head at Maraba village, Kabolebo Location in Tinderet District.
"He arrived home drunk and said he was looking for his brother, whom he wanted to fight with over an undisclosed domestic dispute," Pauline Rono, a local leader told The Standard. Mrs Rono said the suspect’s brother was not home at the time and the man instead picked a quarrel with his mother before he attacked her with the panga.
Mr Daniel Tum, a son to the deceased confirmed that his brother hacked their mother to death after he arrived home drunk at night.
The elderly woman raised the alarm attracting neighbours who rescued her from the attacker during the Saturday night incident. Villagers are said to have disarmed the man and beat him, inflicting serious injuries on him. Both mother and son were rushed to Maraba Sub-district Hospital, but the woman passed away while undergoing treatment.
The man was later transferred to Meteitei Sub-district Hospital before police from the nearby Songok Police Station arrested him. Police said investigation into the incident was ongoing and the suspect will be arraigned in court soon.
Strangled wife
The body of the woman was moved to Kapsabet District Hospital mortuary. In the second incident residents of Mwanzo Estate in Eldoret town woke up to shocking news that a pastor had strangled his wife and disappeared. The couple is said to have quarrelled over alleged misappropriation of money they collect from tenants as rent of residential houses belonging to the woman’s father, a senior official at Central Organisation of Trade Unions. "The pastor is said to have squandered rent from the tenants and altered records of payments in a ledger book. When his wife found out and confronted him with the facts, a fight broke out leading to the murder," a neighbour who declined to be named told The Standard at the scene.
