No feasting: Why Mombasa twilight girls turn down Indian soldiers

The arrival of naval and cruise ships in Mombasa, particularly, from the United States and Europe signals happiness among commercial sex workers in the coastal city. It is a period to reap big. During this period, the streets lit up as the twilight girls at Mombasa Red-light District gear up for action to usher in the soldiers and tourists, who lodge at the famous and revered club.
Young and old, donned in revealing attires, sit pretty on high stools by the counters and edges of the open makuti touched roof club ready to serve the customers. Most of the girls who spoke to The Nairobian confessed that it is usually ‘early Christmas’ when the soldiers from the US and Europe check in since they have no qualms splashing money and goodies.
However, they claimed they don’t like Indian soldiers who are mean and stingy. Sheila (not her real name) says that the Indian soldiers are stingy and the exchange level of Rupee is too little compared to the dollar, pound, or Euro.
But she is quick to add that, unlike the US marines, the Indian soldiers are not rough and respect women, but they are “bad for business.”
“Those guys are a joke. They want to pay Sh 500 for a party with three guys. I would rather give my Kenyan brothers for free than offer my services to them,” says Sheila.
Another call girl, Rispher ( not her real name) says girls who sleep with the Indians soldiers are either hungry or very broke. She confessed that she cannot allow the soldiers to test drive her and still pay peanuts.
“When a naval ship from other countries like the US docks, we are ready for a big payday. The soldiers are generous and very kind,” she added.
Rispher reveals that during these months, everything shots up, including the price of alcohol and condoms.
“During this period, everything is expensive. For example, a bottle of beer that normally costs Sh300 goes for Sh1,500,” she says, adding they are also forced to double the cost of their services.
Casablanca Club Manager, Athanas Omondi says they don’t discriminate their clients since it is all about the money.
Omondi says discipline is the most important aspect of the business and they always ensure the safety of customers.
He says the club owner, the late Okoth Waudi had set rules and regulations which the call girls must adhere to.
“All our customers are treated with respect. We don’t treat any of the women here as hookers, they are our customers. Mzee had set out the guidelines on how they are supposed to operate,” says Omondi.
He says the club gained its fame through marketing and ensuring customers’ needs are catered for.
The club monitors all their revelers closely, with security cameras and security details on watch 24 hours.
Omondi revealed that the hookers mostly prefer to attend to their clients in the guest rooms within the premises for safety reasons.
“The club boasts of four counters, a vast dance floor on the upper deck, a private lounge, a restaurant, guest rooms, and a strip joint that is no longer operational. We also have a parlour inside where the ladies can freshen themselves. They also have lockers where they keep their handbags and clothes,” he said.
Rispher added that the money they make from the soldiers they buy expensive clothes and alcohol.
