A man has landed himself in court after he allegedly stole from his date on their first meeting at a Nairobi restaurant. According to court documents, Martin Githinji conspired with his friend on 12th August to steal from his date, Grace Karimi Kanampiu.
Police stated they stole a mobile phone worth Sh14,000 at a hotel along Tom Mboya Street. According to police reports, Githinji together with Karimi had planned to meet at the hotel for the first time.
However when Karimi arrived, she reportedly found Githinji with another man and joined them at the same table. Police stated that a while later, Githinji left the restaurant briefly, leaving Karimi with his friend who is said to have borrowed her phone to make a call outside but never returned.
The court heard that Githinji, who was still within the precincts of the restaurant, was detained and his phone checked by security guards who found that he had exchanged text messages with his friend concerning the missing mobile phone.
He was taken to Central Police Station before his arraignment in court where he denied the accusation.
The court granted him a cash bail of Sh50,000 pending hearing in October.
