Human rights activist Boniface Mulinge Muteti has been found alive after going missing for four days. He was reportedly abandoned in the Lukenya area of Machakos County early Friday morning, September 25, 2026.
According to Vocal Africa Chief Executive Officer Hussein Khalid, Muteti was dumped at about 3:00 a.m. by people believed to be his captors.
"Comrade Muteti Mulinge has been found. He was dumped last night around 3am in the Lukenya area. He had to walk for a long distance to a shell petrol station where he got a good samaritan who helped him with a phone to call his brother. He is disoriented, weak and injured. He is currently receiving treatment at Sanel Hospital in Mlolongo area. Family, friends and comrades are proceeding there", said Hussein Khalid via his official Instagram page.
After being left behind, the injured activist walked for a long distance before reaching a Shell petrol station.
A Good Samaritan at the petrol station helped Muteti use a phone to contact his brother. His family and fellow activists then arranged for him to receive medical attention.
Muteti was taken to Sanel Hospital in Mlolongo, where he is currently undergoing treatment. Khalid said the activist was weak, injured and deeply disoriented after the ordeal.

“He is disoriented, weak and injured. He is currently receiving treatment at Sanel Hospital in the Mlolongo area,” Khalid said.
Muteti went missing on Monday, September 21, after allegedly being arrested in Nairobi’s Central Business District. Reports indicate that he had attended protests calling for the release of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye.
The activist reportedly left the main protest group to visit a cybercafe and print a petition that he intended to submit to the police.
He later sent a message saying that he had been arrested, but his phone became unreachable shortly afterwards.
His disappearance caused concern among his family, friends and human rights organisations.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission and Vocal Africa called for his immediate release and urged the authorities to explain his whereabouts.
The matter was also reported at Nairobi’s Central Police Station. On Thursday, September 24, fellow activist Francis Awino filed an urgent application at the Milimani Law Courts seeking orders requiring the police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to produce Muteti in court or explain where he was being held.
Muteti was found only hours after the court intervention. Police have not responded to claims that he was arrested or abducted.
His case has renewed concerns among civil society groups over alleged abductions and enforced disappearances involving activists and government critics in Kenya.
