Panic gripped commuters at the Likoni Ferry crossing in Mombasa after strong ocean currents disrupted the docking of an MV Likoni ferry, leaving passengers stranded.
The tense incident unfolded as the ferry struggled to manoeuvre towards the landing ramp, with the powerful currents appearing to push the vessel off course.
As the ferry drifted and struggled to align with the docking point, passengers aboard were visibly distressed, with screams and cries heard from the crowded deck.
People on the shoreline watched anxiously as the vessel battled the rough waters. Some could be heard shouting at passengers not to disembark until the ferry was safely secured.
“Msishuke, bakini ndani jamani,” those outside the ferry could be heard shouting, urging passengers to remain inside.
The commotion also attracted the attention of people along the nearby shoreline.

Fortunately, the situation was eventually brought under control, allowing the ferry to complete its docking safely.
No injuries or casualties were reported.
The incident has once again highlighted the challenges faced at the Likoni Channel, one of Kenya’s busiest crossings, where ferries transport thousands of pedestrians and motorists between Mombasa Island and the South Coast every day.
