A Kenyan long-distance truck driver has been killed in the Democratic Republic of Congo while on a delivery mission.
According to a leaked WhatsApp message, Edwin Njuguna was last seen on April 3.
Earlier, on March 26, he had informed his cousin that he was facing serious challenges and was under the protection of military officers.
“I have met certain challenges. Roads in this country are in disrepair. My trailer broke down. Right now, I am being shielded by the military. Yesterday I was about to be beaten by armed people who wanted to steal from me," he said in a voice note.
"Luckily the military officers came to my rescue because I was in the forest. They are the ones protecting me. The owner of the goods I was delivering said he would come with another vehicle, take up the goods and burn the trailer. That is what I am waiting for until now,” he added.

One X user, Jay Dre, who is also a fellow driver, recalled their encounters at the border, where they would spend evenings playing pool as they waited for clearance documents.
“Very sad joh… nikikumbuka how I met Edwin hapo kwa border ya Ug and Congo. We used to play pool evening hours akingoja documents apeleke mzigo Bunia. Rest in peace Edwin.”
Njuguna had been transporting goods from Mombasa to Congo when his trailer, KDJ 040C, broke down in the Bunia area.
However, the expected assistance never arrived.
The military officers who had initially been protecting him reportedly abandoned him in the bush, leaving him vulnerable. He was later ambushed and killed, with his body discovered in a nearby forest.
“We came to know of his death at around 4pm when we received a call and photos of him lying down. His body bore stab wounds and gunshot injuries. The body had started decomposing,” a relative said.
Fellow Kenyan drivers later found the vehicle abandoned at the scene, noting the driver had been killed and left there for three days.
His employer was identified as Atlas Mar Company, a Nairobi-based firm.
