Kenyan audiences are getting a closer look at one of West Africa’s rising musical exports, as Ghanaian singer and songwriter Petrah arrived in the country for a media tour aimed at expanding her footprint across East Africa.
Born Petra Miriam Tettey in Accra, the multifaceted artiste has steadily built a name for herself since breaking into the scene in 2016. Her debut single My Man quickly drew attention and earned her a nomination for Best Female Vocalist at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards the following year, signalling the arrival of a distinctive new voice.
She has since maintained that momentum with a catalogue that reflects both vocal strength and creative range. Her follow-up single Baby, featuring Nigerian star Reekado Banks, further elevated her profile and secured a nomination at the 4SyteTV Music Video Awards. In 2019, she won Best Edited Video at the 3rd TV Music Video Awards, underscoring her growing influence not only musically but visually.
Signed to Manner Records, Petrah has become known for her ability to blend genres seamlessly, moving between R&B, pop, Afrobeats, highlife and dancehall with ease. This versatility has positioned her as a “multifaceted” performer capable of connecting with diverse audiences across the continent.
Over the years, she has collaborated with a wide range of African heavyweights, including Shatta Wale, Samini, R2Bees, Efya and Medikal, among others. These partnerships have helped broaden her reach while reinforcing her status as a dynamic and adaptable artist.
Petrah’s journey into music began in church, where her powerful vocals were first discovered. Raised in a household of five girls by a faith-driven mother, she developed her talent from a young age before pursuing formal education at Krobo Girls Senior High School and later earning a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from the University of Professional Studies, Accra.
Her stage name, derived from the Greek word “petros” meaning “rock”, reflects the resilience and strength that underpin her artistic journey. She cites global icon Whitney Houston as a key influence, drawing inspiration from her vocal prowess and stage presence.
With two extended plays already released, Petrah continues to push creative boundaries while building an international profile. Her visit to Kenya marks another step in that journey, as she seeks to connect with new audiences and position herself among Africa’s next wave of globally recognised stars.
