The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has dismissed reports that the government plans to acquire Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to boost efforts to fight Covid-19.

A source at the board, who requested anonymity, said there were no negotiations with the manufacturer of the vaccine.

The report came out after a local daily published a story claiming there were plans to ship the vaccine to Kenya after India banned exportation of Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine to focus on vaccinating its citizens first to mitigate rising cases of Covid-19.

“PPB has not got any application for Pfizer-Biotech vaccine,” a senior PPB official told The Standard, adding that Kenya has no storage capacity for Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines. According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines are stored in an ultra-cold freezer, thermal shipping container, freezer or refrigerator.
