The department of public health is conducting a house-to-house campaign to prevent cholera.
The county is targeting at least 450,000 households for training on basic hygiene and importance of drinking clean water.
Chief Officer of Public Health Samuel King’ori said the campaign, led by public health officers, community health workers and local administrators, began last week at Kaptembwo Slum in Nakuru town.
“We want to reach everyone to prevent diseases attributed to poor sanitation,” he said.
Two cases of cholera were confirmed in Nairobi last week. In February 4, the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) reported that 572 cases of cholera had been reported in Nairobi, Narok and Kajiado since January.
Public health officers have also been deployed to all sub-counties to monitor the hygiene of all food joints including those located along highways.
“Food sold in hotels must be fit for consumption and all operators should be able to disclose their suppliers,"said Mr King'ori.
