Members of the Lamu County Assembly have welcomed a project to enrol 20,000 families in the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

The deal brokered by Governor Fahim Twaha (pictured) will see poor families have access to medical care for free.

Last week, Mr Twaha was in Nairobi where signed the deal with NHIF that will cost the county Sh120 million.

Twaha said his administration arrived at the decision to enrol poor and needy families in the scheme to achieve universal healthcare.

Geoffrey Mwangi, NHIF's chief executive, promised to ensure that the programme worked in the county.
