Eldoret, Kenya: A second psychiatric centre has been unveiled to supplement services offered at Mathari Hospital.

The psychiatric centre in Eldoret will house 40 male and 30 female patients drawn from the Western Kenya region including the neigbouring country of Uganda, South Sudan and Tanzania.

Addressing the Press at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital grounds after receiving the keys of the new centre from the contractor, Director John Kibosia said the unit would be equipped with adequate and modern facilities.

“This mental hospital is a unique and modern one compared to the one we have right now (Mathari). We made a deliberate attempt to ensure that we are establishing a holistic unit that will cater for all the need of our patients,” Kibosia said.

The director said the Sh30 million psychiatric centre will adopt new scientific methods to hasten the recovery of patients.

He appealed to the Government to increase the number of psychiatric doctors in the country due to high cases of mental disorders being recorded.

Kibosio said more medical students should be encouraged to pursue psychiatry.
