President William Ruto has welcomed American streaming sensation IShowSpeed to Kenya, rolling out the red carpet for the global content creator as he kicks off the Kenyan leg of his Africa tour.
The 20-year-old YouTube and Twitch star, born Darren Watkins Jr., arrived in the country to an enthusiastic reception from fans, students and government officials, as scenes from his visit quickly went viral online.
In a message shared after IShowSpeed’s arrival, President Ruto described Kenya as a country of warmth, culture and limitless possibility.
“Jambo IShowSpeed, welcome to Kenya, karibu Kenya. Kenya is not just another country, Kenya is a pulse, a feeling, Kenya is home. This is magical Kenya, the origin of wonders,” Ruto said.
IShowSpeed’s visit is part of his month-long continental tour dubbed ‘Speed Does Africa’, which has seen him travel across several African countries while livestreaming his experiences to millions of followers worldwide.
The streamer kicked off his Kenyan visit with a surprise appearance at a Nairobi school, where excited students gathered to welcome him, chanting his name and capturing the moment on their phones.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano also welcomed the influencer, noting that his visit presents a unique opportunity to showcase Kenya beyond its traditional tourist attractions.
“Beyond the legendary safaris, the true magic of Kenya lies in the beauty of our diversity. Every corner of this country has a story to tell,” Miano said.
She invited IShowSpeed to experience Kenya’s culture, food and heritage, saying the country offers far more than wildlife and scenic landscapes.
During his stay, IShowSpeed is expected to visit several iconic locations, including the Maasai Mara, as well as engage in football-related activities and cultural experiences — all broadcast live to his massive global audience.
With millions of viewers tuning in to his streams, Kenyan officials hope the visit will boost the country’s visibility as a youthful, vibrant and culturally rich destination.
