Miss Material Girl has made her mark the world over and cemented her place as one of the most influential pop icons on the planet. She has gone ahead and worked on making a difference by not only adopting 2 children from malawi, but also setting up the Raising Malawi Charity, aimed at bringing an end to the extreme poverty and hardship endured by the 1 million Malawi orphans.
It would however seem that these efforts are not quite being appreciated by the Malawian government. According to CNN, Madonna was involved in a bitter war of words with the Malawian Government after her recent visit to the country over accusations that she demanded VIP treatment.
A government spokesman , in a statement, said that Madonna expected the governement to drop everything so as to give her special treatment.
He went ahead to accuse the Pop Star of overstating her philanthophic efforts by announcing she had built a number of schools in the country yet she had only built a number of classrooms.
The statement explained that while they recognized her noble contributions and her international fame, they were under no obligation to give her special treatment.
CNN reports that Madonna reacted to the accusations by releasing a statement where she says, "I'm saddened that Malawi's President Joyce Banda has chosen to release lies about what we've accomplished, my intentions, how I personally conducted myself while visiting Malawi and other untruths. I have no intentions of being distracted by these ridiculous allegations. I came to Malawi seven years ago with honorable intentions. I returned earlier this month to view the new schools we built. I did not ever ask or demand special treatment at the airport or elsewhere during my visit."
The star attributes the feud to her history with the President’s sister, Anjimile Mtila Oponyo, who once used to run the Raising Malawi Charity but was fired.
